What to prepare before applying
DOCUMENTS
The following is what Rakuten Mobile states on its own English pages. This page only points to them — the linked pages are the authority, and conditions can change, so please check them before you apply.
“Residence card, special permanent resident certificate, etc.”
“Provide your credit card or bank account information for monthly payments or direct debits.”
“If you don’t have a Rakuten ID, please sign up for a free Rakuten membership.”
Needed if your current carrier does not support MNP One Stop
- If you use a Residence Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate, Rakuten Mobile states: “Must be within the expiration date”, “Must have address listed”, “The front and back sides must be uploaded”.
- For some documents, Rakuten Mobile states that “Simple Mobile ID Verification is not available” → “apply at a Rakuten Mobile shop”.
- Applicants under 18 must provide written consent from a legal representative.

Which ID document can you use?

Rakuten Mobile publishes which documents it accepts, not which visa types may apply. So this table follows the documents.

A Residence Card is issued to mid-to-long-term residents. It is not issued for stays of three months or less, or for “Temporary Visitor”, “Diplomat” or “Official” status — so if you are in Japan on a short stay, you will not hold the document listed first above. Please check your own situation with Rakuten Mobile.

Does it cost anything to enter?
No. You only open the referral URL and log in with your Rakuten ID. Entering does not oblige you to sign a contract.
What happens if I apply directly on the Rakuten Mobile website?
The employee referral benefit will not be applied. Please open the referral URL from the button on this page and log in first, then apply.
Is this a scam?
No. This is the Rakuten Employee Referral Campaign run by Rakuten Mobile. Your login and application both take place on Rakuten Mobile pages, and this site never charges you anything. If you are unsure, you can contact Rakuten Mobile customer support and check the campaign code “2162”.
Is “Hatoda Hatoo” a real name?
It is a pen name. This site is run personally by a current Rakuten employee. Details are on the About page.
Will my personal information be sent to the site owner?
No. Logging in and applying both happen on Rakuten Mobile pages. This site has no way of receiving what you enter.
I am not a Japanese citizen. Can I apply?
Rakuten Mobile lists “Residence card, special permanent resident certificate, etc.” among the identity documents it accepts, and states that the document must be within its expiration date and have an address listed. Please check Rakuten Mobile’s own page for the current conditions.
